The Jennie Vennerström Cannon Studio
Built in 1927 ‘The Jennie Vennerström Cannon’ house was designed by architect Lilian “Lillie” Belle Bridgman. Lilian was originally affiliated with the sciences after her studies but her life took a fateful turn and under the guidance of her friend Bernard Maybeck she pursued a second career as an architect, studying at UC Berkeley. Lillie was one for the few women at the turn of the century that worked in architecture and many of her clients were prominent women of her time. Jennie V. Cannon was one of those women, an artist and painter who commissioned Lillie to build her a studio and private residence at 1629 La Vereda. Jennie was born in Minnesota and in early childhood developed a strong aptitude to drawing, furthering her skills in art as a young adult at various institutions. She was integral in the Carmel artist scene in the early 1900’s and ultimately relocated to Berkeley to continue working as an artist.
Over generations La Vereda has been lovingly updated and expanded to accommodate the needs of modern living all the while retaining its inherent character. It has a vibrant history of owners; artists, intellectuals and scholars. Respectfully nearly all the original details, shingles, hand hewn redwood beams and mahogany floors were considerately preserved.
Peacefully tucked in a gentle North Berkeley hillside and surrounded by sculptural trees, it is harmonious with nature. There was incredible care in the design, its connection to the outdoors, fresh air and beautiful sight lines. The first floor living rooms are built around the focal fireplace and a front bay of windows with a partial view of San Francisco. An open concept and updated kitchen-dining space has French doors to a verdant patio. There is also laundry, linen closets and a full bath on the main level. Three bedrooms and two baths on the upper floor all with exterior access, vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors and an abundance of natural light. The primary suite has skylights and a second gas fireplace, it is spacious, bright and the hand hewn beams of the main living room are echoed. There is a lower level bonus room with the fourth full bath that has a separate entrance and privacy. There is an off-street upper parking pad in addition to a one car garage plus standing basement storage space. The landscaped yard is easy to maintain, lush with ferns, maples, moss, artistic rock walls, trailing succulents and perennials.
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be the next caretakers of such a treasured and historic home. Situated in a coveted and remarkable North Berkeley enclave.

Depending on where you live, North Berkeley Hills residents can enjoy views of the San Francisco and Oakland skylines, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, and Mount Tamalpais.
